Where did "Montessori" come from?
Montessori (pronounced MON-tuh-SORE-ee) education was founded in 1907 by Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children are quite capable of teaching themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities. Now, nearly a century after Maria Montessori's first casa dei bambini (children's house) in Rome, Montessori education is found all over the world, spanning the ages from birth through high school.
What is the difference between Montessori and traditional education?
Montessori education emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual paces from activities they choose themselves. Montessori teachers constantly observe each child, so they know when the child is ready to be introduced to a new skill or concept. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Montessori classes place children in three-year age groups forming communities in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones.

Why should my child attend West Side Montessori Center?
West Side offers individual attention, small multi-age classes, and an experienced, skilled faculty, all geared to nurture a life-long love of learning in young children. Parents are encouraged to participate in the education process and many take an active role as volunteers at the school. Does West Side offer Financial Aid?
Our goal is to make West Side affordable to all qualified families. Using the same process adopted by thousands of other private schools, we rely on the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment. In this way, families are assured of a confidential and unbiased review of their financial statements. Money is also raised for Financial Aid by Board of Trustee directed projects such as the school’s annual spring fundraising event and the Annual Enhancement Fund.
What happens after Montessori?
Research shows that students, teachers, and parents all generally agree that Montessori alumni are independent workers, have good work habits, and adjust well to new situations. They rate well for their reading, writing, and math skills. They also exhibit a consistent "best effort," self-confidence, respect for teachers and other students, enthusiasm for learning, and the ability to work independently and creatively.
